1959年12月征兵開始，雷鋒迫切要求參軍，焦化廠領導舍不得放他走。雷鋒跑了幾十里路來到遼陽市兵役局（現(xiàn)人民武裝部）表明參軍的決心。他身高只有1．54米，有點胖，娃娃臉，眉毛粗，眼睛大，體重不足55公斤，均不符合征兵條件，但因政治素質(zhì)過硬和有經(jīng)驗技術，最后被破例批準入伍。參加人民解放軍后，編入工程兵某部運輸連四班，任班長。他全心全意為人民服務，只要是對人民有利的事，他都心甘情愿地去做。他曾多次立功，被評為節(jié)約標兵和模范共青團員。
